After spending some time with college rockers Violet Strange, Deanna Lynn decided to lose the lush power pop she had been writing and turned to a more inward sound. Lynn started by changing her stage name (she was formerly Deanna Campbell), then stripped down her arrangements to almost a country sound. Combining the moody minimalism of Sarah McLachlan with a down-home appeal created by her southern accent, she began to perform live and developing her sound into a unique form of alternative country.
