Charles Sheffield was an early-'60s R&B singer from Lake Charles, LA, noted for the local/regional hit "It's Your Voodoo Working," which is acclaimed more now than when it debuted on Excello Records in 1961. Sheffield (aka Mad Dog) was miscast in his birthplace, which is known for producing zydeco musicians, not blues or R&B artists. Boozoo Chavis and Rockin' Sidney are from the area, as well as Goldband Studios, where the zydeco artists whack out their craft. Sheffield did use the studios, though he recorded in a totally different style. He cut "It's Your Voodoo Working" at Crowley Studios, however, which is most noted for blues and R&B recordings. Sheffield wrote it and about five other songs that he recorded. A few more records failed to cause a ripple, and Sheffield soured on the business and disappeared from sight. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
