Biography

Though they scored few hits and leaned toward the wimpish end of the British Invasion spectrum, John Carter and Ken Lewis gave '60s rock too many intriguing footnotes to be dismissed. In the dark days of pre-Beatles British rock & roll, the duo, who started recording in 1961, was among the few U.K. performers to tread an unabashedly rock path and write their own material. Jimmy Page was briefly a member, adding his nascent guitar to a couple of their singles in 1963. The pair sang backup harmonies on a few of the Who's early recordings, rang up hits as members of the Ivy League, and hit the Top Ten as leaders of the Flowerpot Men with their borderline hippie satire "Let's Go to San Francisco." And they wrote "A Little Bit of Soul," a huge punk/bubblegum hit for the Music Explosion in 1967. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
