Biography
"I'll Be Back" was the title of a song published by the team of Rex Preis and Bill Bryan circa 1944 in Hollywood by none other than Western Music Publishing, an imprint that for the cowboy music culture has the same scent of authenticity as manure on a boot. "And I'll Have Some Friends With Me" might be a good subtitle for the song, since by the time it was recorded by Gene Autry the credited composition team had extended to listAutry/Bryan/Dean/Preis.There are some 30 different published songs with this title, and the conclusion would have to be that Bryan and buddies had commercial instincts: Elvis Presley and The Beatles each had their own "I'll Be Back", as did Cliff Martinez, leader of Question Mark and the Mysterians. Nonetheless, it is a sad fact that the listening public at large does not remember any of these ditties, at least in terms of instant recognition of someone or something associated with the three words "I'll be back." That honor would instead wind up going to a movie actor named Arnold with an Austrian accent. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
