The Bellbats' brand of jangly indie pop owes much to mid-period Feelies, early Yo La Tengo, and Let's Active, whose main dude Mitch Easter produced the Raleigh-Durham, NC, trio's first album. Guitarist Emory Ball, bassist Laura Weislo and drummer Max Acker formed the Bellbats in 1994 and released a split single with another local band, Econoline, the following year. The Easter-produced album Century followed in 1997, after which Acker left the band. He was replaced by local scenester Jerry Kee, who had produced that 1995 single. A self-titled EP, also produced by Kee, came out in 2000. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
