After the dissolution of Denali, former frontwoman Maura Davis briefly considered taking a break from music and possibly going back to school. Before the Richmond, VA, native could enroll in classes, however, Davis found herself writing new songs that she wanted to pursue. With home-recorded demos on hand, she soon called upon Chicago-based bassist Stephen Howard (Pinebender) and drummer Ryan Rapsys (Euphone, Heroic Doses) -- who had both played for Denali on their final tour -- to join her new project in the summer of 2004. Songs subsequently began to take shape through frequent mailings between Illinois and Virginia. Davis eventually flew to Chicago to begin actual rehearsals, and with the final addition of guitarist Matt Clark (Pinebender, Joan of Arc), Ambulette (originally Bella Lea) was complete. Together, the group wove pensive, heartfelt sentiments through a somewhat brighter atmosphere than Denali. Ambulette's moody and intimate debut EP, The Lottery, was recorded in the spring of 2005 and released by Astralwerks the following March. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide
