Sad to say, Acid Gallery were never as daring as their name promised they might be, their music being decidedly more pop than psychedelic or freakbeat. They were a four-piece band led by guitarist/singer Vic Elmes and featuring Mike Blakely, the brother of the Tremeloes' Alan Blakely, on drums. They'd started life as the Epics during the mid-'60s but switched to the hipper sounding name around the time of the 1967 psychedelic explosion. They were most notable for their 1967 British CBS single "Dance Around the Maypole" b/w "Right Toe Blues," the A-side of which was written and produced by Roy Wood, who also sang backing vocals on it, and was joined in the latter capacity by his future Move/ELO bandmate Jeff Lynne. Blakely later joined Jeff Christie's band, called Christie, and brought Elmes in as a guitarist and songwriter as well. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
