Destiny's Child's "Independent Women Part 1" defies stormy weather with a smooth sail into its 11th straight week at No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100. It was expected that the perpetual No. 2 entry, Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me," was going to topple "Independent" from the chart's top post this week. But it fell short, as "Independent" got an unexpected power boost from sales of its maxi-single, released in December.

Jury selection began in the gun possession and bribery trial of rapper Sean "Puffy" Combs yesterday (Jan. 17) in New York with the judge promising prospective jurors it will be an interesting case. "If you ever had a desire to serve on a jury, I can assure you, professionally and personally, this will be a good one," Judge Charles Solomon told prospective jurors, as he assembled a pool of 150 people to hear a case that could last five to six weeks.

The former members of the Dead Kennedys say remastered albums and live releases from the defunct punk pioneers can be expected to hit the market as early as this spring. The flow of DK goods comes as the result of a December court ruling against the band's former leader, Jello Biafra, who previously controlled the band's catalog through his Alternative Tentacles label.
