The Roots See New Album Becoming a Movie or Play

Kid Cudi, Wale, De La Soul and James Murphy are among the top-line acts at the 2012 Roots Picnic, the annual Philadelphia festival hosted by city music legends the Roots. Now in its fifth year, the event has expanded from one day to two, invading Philly's Festival Pier at Penn's Landing on June 2-3.

Along with Maybach Music's own Wale and newly minted WZRD Kid Cudi, the Roots Picnic will include a set from hip-hop legends De La Soul, who will be backed by the Roots; a performance from Rakim, who will perform his classic album "Paid in Full" in its entirety; and a DJ set from James Murphy, the LCD Soundsystem mastermind who retired the band last spring. Major Lazer, St. Vincent, Danny Brown and tUnE-yArDs are also on the bill, and of course, the Roots will offer a headlining set, like every year.

Tickets for the festival went on sale Friday morning through Live Nation, with two-day passes running $80. According to Live Nation, De La Soul and Wale will be the marquee acts on Saturday, while Kid Cudi is slated for the following day; the Roots will perform on both days of the fest.

Previous performers at the Roots Picnic, which generally mixes veteran hip-hop acts with rising indie bands, have included Nas, Vampire Weekend, Public Enemy, the Black Keys and Clipse.
