5 Summer Music Festivals To Watch 2012

You already have your tickets (and sunscreen) ready for well-established fests like Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Pitchfork, and Bumbershoot, but the summer of 2012 also has a promising selection of new and up-and-coming musical gatherings to keep your eye on. We've picked five of the most interesting, from the rock-around-New-York CBGB fete to Drake's Canadian weekend jam, to Jay-Z's patriotic Philly Labor Day two-parter featuring hip-hop, rock and EDM.

CBGB Festival

Lineup: Guided By Voices, Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Cloud Nothings, Wyclef Jean and hundreds more.

Dates: July 5-8

Location: Various venues in New York, NY

Festival Info: CBGB.com

With over 300 bands playing at 30 venues across New York, the CBGB fest will toast the memory of the CBGB & OMFUG club with four days of multi-layered rock music. Along with performances from Guided By Voices, Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Cloud Nothings, the CBGB Festival will feature premieres and screenings of new film projects focusing on The Clash and Archers of Loaf.

80/35

Lineup: Death Cab For Cutie, The Avett Brothers, Dinosaur Jr., Freddie Gibbs, Leftover Salmon, Dan Deacon, Atmosphere and more. Dates: July 6-7

Location: Western Gateway Park, Des Moines, IA

Festival Info: 80-35.com

The 80/35 fest (the name refers to the intersection of two famous Iowa interstates) showcases an eclectic mix of rock, alternative and hip-hop. Along with indie favorites the Avett Brothers and Death Cab For Cutie, this year's lineup includes veteran guitar thrashers Dinosaur Jr., electronica weirdo Dan Deacon and Indiana gangster rapper Freddie Gibbs.

Firefly Music Festival

Lineup: The Killers, The Black Keys, Jack White, John Legend, the Flaming Lips, Young The Giant, Lupe Fiasco, Girl Talk and more. Dates: July 20-22

Location: Dover International Speedway, Dover, Delaware

Festival Info: FireflyFestival.com

The inaugural Firefly music fest will bring a formidable lineup to Dover, and try to accomplish what the dearly departed All Points West festival could not: establish a Northeast alt-rock festival with legs. 2012 festival chameleons the Black Keys, Jack White and Death Cab For Cutie will be there, as will the Killers (who are gearing up for their fourth album release), John Legend and the Flaming Lips.

OVO Fest

Lineup: Drake, the Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, 2 Chainz

Date: Aug. 5

Location: Molson Canadian Amphitheater, Toronto, Canada

Festival Info: Octobersveryown.net

The third incarnation of Drake's annual salute to his Canada hometown will once again include a headlining set from Drizzy himself and a performance from his R&B protege the Weeknd, who made one of his first live appearances at last year's fest. Also on the bill are A$AP Rocky and 2 Chainz, two rappers with a boatload of buzz who separately supported Drake on his Club Paradise tour in the past year.

Made In America

Lineup: Jay-Z, Pearl Jam, Skrillex, D'Angelo, Odd Future, Maybach Music, Passion Pit, Santigold, Afrojack, X and more

Date: Sept. 1-2

Location: Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, Pa.

Festival Info: MadeinAmerica.com

Brooklyn native Jay-Z will take the turnpike down to Philadelphia for the inauguration of his own festival, which was announced in May and will be headlined and curated by the rap superstar. Although the full lineup has yet to be revealed, early additions have included rock icons Pearl Jam; reclusive R&B star D'Angelo; EDM titans Calvin Harris and Afrojack; and indie rock whippersnappers like Passion Pit and the Dirty Projectors. Set to be held in Philly's Fairmount Park, Made in America will serve as a book-end to the city's other hip-hop-centric two-day fest, the Roots Picnic, which was held on June 2-3.
