Insane Clown Posse admits that they tried for 'big-name acts,' but came up short.
Cheech & Chong and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic will be senior statesman among a host of rap and rock acts performing at Insane Clown Posse's 13th annual Gathering of the Juggalos, taking place Aug. 8-12 at Cave-In-Rock, Ill.
The Detroit rap duo has announced the festival lineup with a highly produced 23-minute video on its official web site, portraying the festival as a "Walking Dead"-style refuge from a zombie infestation that's taken over the world. The clip touts not only the musical performers by also additional attractions such as an expanded comedy tent -- headlined by Cheech & Chong with Ralphie May, Jamie Kennedy, Bobcat Goldthwait and others. A full slate of ICP's JCW wrestling is also slated, as well as a Miss Juggalette contest.
ICP's Violent J previously told Billboard.com that the Gathering would feature "more rock than we ever had, and a lot of f***in' rap," and the lineup certainly bears that out. Master P, the Geto Boys, Tech N9ne, DMX, The Game, Kottonmouth Kings, Kool Keith, Slaine, Mack 10, Onyx, Prozak and Detroit underground sensation Danny Brown, along with a full complement from ICP's Psychopathic Records label, will represent from the hip-hop side. The rock, meanwhile, will come from P.O.D., Soulfly, Static-X, Mushroomhead, Rehab, (Hed) Pe and Zug Island. The pop duo the Millionaires and the Michael Jackson tribute group Who's Bad? are also on the Gathering bill.
Violent J does, however, lament, "The idea was to step it up by getting some huge, big, big-name acts -- but believe it or not, we couldn't. Nobody would agree to do it. Everybody we asked, sweet-ass bands like Alice in Chains, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie... everyone we tried to get of that level, it wasn't happening." He adds that Limp Bizkit came close to playing the Gathering, but it didn't pan out, either.
Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope will each host their own special late-night parties during the five-day Gathering: the former's West Side Party show will feature Lil Eazy and Warren G, among others, while Shaggy's Beast of the East will host Raekwon, the Fat Boys, Rahzel and Biz Markie. Psychopathic duo Twizttid is also hosting a Dirty Dirty Party during the Gathering.
And this year ICP will play its headlining set on Saturday night rather than Sunday. "There's still a lot of shit going on Sunday," Shaggy says, "but this gives Juggalos and even curious spectators a chance to see us and then pack up and leave Sunday if they have to get back to work on Monday, y'know?"
ICP will drop its new album, "The Mighty Death Pop," two days after the Gathering, on Aug. 14.
