Boyz II Men Wins Hearts at Sands Show
Boyz II Men still has what it takes to captivate fans, 21 years into its career.
A year after headlining a "Love Cruise" in celebration of their 20th anniversary, the R&B trio -- Shawn Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Wanya Morris -- brought their live show to the stage at Pennsylvania's Sands Bethlehem Event Center on Saturday night (Oct. 20).
As the lights lowered shortly after 8 pm, screams from the packed venue grew louder. Boyz II Men walked out to a slideshow of career highlights playing across the huge stage screen.
The guys wasted no time in hyping the audience by hitting them with tune after familiar tune from their seemingly bottomless discography, starting with hits from 1991 debut, "Cooleyhighharmony." Boyz II Men blazed through a collection of classics ("4 Seasons of Loneliness," Hot 100 No. 1 "Water Runs Dry" and No. 2 "On Bended Knee") and newer tunes like "One More Dance" from 2011 album, "Twenty."
Although they've been making music for decades, all three men can still flex their golden vocal chords, out-crooning many other, younger R&B singers.
In between nostalgic songs, the trio commanded the audience to sing along to a medley of Motown hits from Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" to The Temptations' "My Girl." Fans stood up from their seats and happily obliged by not only singing word-for-word but also two-stepping along with group.
The group's one-hour set overflowed with emotional, heartfelt moments. During their cover of Journey's "Open Arms," a happy couple close to the front of the stage, got engaged. Shawn took a moment to congratulate them on their proposal. He also stirred up laughs when telling the husband-to-be that he was sure to have a "good night."
Shortly after stealing hearts when handing out roses during "I'll Make Love to You," Boyz II Men left the crowd feeling they'd had a good night indeed when they closed the night with 1992 Grammy Award-winning, "End of the Road."
