5 Times Rappers Name-Dropped High-Fashion Clothing Brands
Yeezy Season may have come and gone, but the month-long fashion circus is still in high gear. To wet your sartorial appetite, Billboard rounded up five of our favorite fashion-centric rap lyrics to hold you over until 'Ye drops a new collection.
"Fashion Killa” - A$AP Rocky
Lyrics: “Rocking, rolling, swagging to the max/ My bitch a fashion killa, she be busy popping tags/ She got a lotta Prada, that Dolce & Gabbana/ I can't forget Escada, and that Balenciaga.”
A$AP Rocky is no stranger to high-fashion. In 2012, his first step into the style world was when he joined Diplo and actor Penn Badgley in a series of slow-motion videos for the Alexander Wang Fall-Winter Men’s campaign. Since then, he has collaborated with J.W. Anderson to release a collection of track jackets, hats and pants, and soon after, he was selected to front the Fall-Winter 2016 Dior Homme campaign.
“The Glory” – Kanye West
Lyrics: "My hat, my shoes, my coat Louis Vuitton stitch with Donatella Versace, that's Louis Vuitton's bitch"
In 2004, when his debut album College Dropout was released, the always-brazen Kanye West referred to himself as the “Louis Vuitton Don” on his track “Last Call.” Since then, ‘Ye has name-dropped the Parisian fashion house on a plethora of tracks including “Pinocchio Story,” “Clique” and “Stronger.” His admiration for the company’s aesthetic came in handy when he designed a collection of sneakers for Louis Vuitton in 2009.
"Versace" – Migos feat. Drake
Lyrics: “Versace, Versace, we stay in the mansion when we in Miami/ The pillows Versace, the sheets are Versace, I just won a Grammy.”
While he puts on for the city of Toronto, and “feels like Atlanta adopted” him, Drake frequents the “Magic City” and apparently is fond of Gianni Versace’s baroque mansion on the water. The late designer’s home is now The Villa Casa Casuarina, a luxury boutique hotel, restaurant and hotel.
“Thought It Was a Drought” – Future
Lyrics: “I just f---ed your bitch in some Gucci flip-flops”
Before Gucci Mane reviewed Alessandro Michele’s latest Gucci collection, Future dropped DS2, aka Dirty Sprite 2 on July 17, 2015, which includes the raunchy hook on “Thought It Was a Drought.” And while he has not fronted high-fashion campaigns, the Atlanta rapper has collaborated with Reebok on their InstaPump Fury kicks this year.
"Gangsta in Designer" – Schoolboy Q
Lyrics: “Always rocking shit I never seen or I never known/ Name grown overseas, fitter Sergio Tacchini shirt, real creeper slippers YSL see the logo on my zipper”
While he is partial to a laid-back style including bucket hats and baggy tees, ScHoolboy Q enjoys wearing a mix of lesser-known and high-end brands including Saint Laurent, a French brand with a celebrity following including Ciara, J.Lo and Taylor Swift.
