This Is NERVO's Beauty Routine: Exclusive
Billboard exclusively caught up with Liv Nervo to talk about their post-show beauty routine, the one product that’s the “bane of our existence” and their upcoming single release.
How did growing up in Australia shape your approach to makeup?
We are who we are and we are a product of our upbringing. I grew up spending the summer on the beach, so it was very normal for girls to not be overly made up. Fresh faced is beautiful to me, and I love the sun and to sunbake, so I just try to be really careful to prevent sun damage. Now that I wear makeup for a job, I actually quite like exploring with makeup, but that comes with the job territory.
What's your pre-show beauty routine like?
I’m very careful to moisturize because I’m always on planes and staying in hotels where there is always air conditioning. When I go to hot places, I’m very careful to put on sun cream as well. Right now I’m using La Prairie (anti-aging emulsion); it’s a sun cream and moisturizer all in one and it’s gorgeous and I love the smell of it. But to be honest, I'm not that fussy. To get over my acne stage, I used Proactiv with a Dermalogica moisturizer. These days I just try whatever I find at the airport's Duty Free and give that a go. We’re not really strict when it comes to creams.
Walk us through the key steps of your stage look.
Mim always does heavier eye makeup because she loves a bold cat eye, and we found this amazing matte black eye pencil from Maybelline that’s super easy to apply. She also loves wearing lots of different color stickers and jewels we've picked up on the road.
I like a good highlight, bronzer and rosy pink cheek. Foundation wise, I use this amazing concealer that’s only available in one store in England. I like to combine foundations using a light MAC Studio Face and Body Foundation and then set it with drops of Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation because it's heavier. Because we travel a lot, our makeup is chosen on packaging and what won’t leak and fall apart in our bag.
Whether on or off stage, we both wear the same perfume, Diptyque L’Ombre dans l'Eau, and have done so for many years. I just bought two bottles in London because I knew we would be on the road a bit. They have so many beautiful scents -- I'd love to work for them just so I could be in a room that smells nice all day long.
Any tips for a post-gig beauty regimen?
If you’re busy all the time, it’s really important for to take "me" time. Run a bath, put a mask on, and just chill. It will do wonders. We’re so lucky because a lot of the hotels we stay at have little salts and we can really lather up, but I love that store Lush. I could just get lost in there.
If TSA confiscated your favorite beauty product, which one would you miss the most?
Oh God, that’s tough. I know Mim’s going to say her hairspray. She uses Calorie Fat Hairspray to get her mohawk where it needs to be. It’s the bane of our existence because it’s only available in America. When traveling we constantly stop by CVS and grab literally eight bottles of that stuff before we head to Europe. The mohawk would never be the same without it.
For me, this is going to sound boring but I have a really nice makeup remover, Nivea Double Effect Eye Makeup Remover, that cleanly takes off makeup without scrubbing. I'd also miss my Shu Uemura oil-based face wash. Because it’s made from oils, your face feels lovely and moisturized already while being clean. When coming back from a gig, you’re tired and the last thing you want to do is scrub your face with hotel soap and tissues.
In a recent Instagram post, you guys shared that you're back in the studio making new music. What can fans look forward to from NERVO?
We’ve been working on new music a lot this summer even though we normally take time off, and are so excited about our new single, "In Your Arms," which will be released as part of our brand new record deal in late September or early October. It's very pop, not dance, so it'll be interesting to see how everyone reacts. It's hard because we’re seen as dance artists but our background is in writing pop music, so we're going back to our roots. Hopefully, NERVO fans get it and like it.
