Another 'American Idol' Deal Ends: Scotty McCreery Splits With Universal Music
After three albums, Scotty McCreery has parted ways with Mercury Nashville/Interscope.
"I enjoyed being on Mercury Nashville/Interscope and I appreciate all the great people who worked hard on my behalf while I was there," McCreery, 22, said of his Universal Music split. "I am excited about what the future holds and the opportunities being presented to me."
The American Idol season 10 winner's two studio albums each debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart, while his holiday set peaked at No. 2. His post-Idol set, 2011's Clear As Day sold 1.22 million, according to Nielsen Music. McCreery was the first country act to open at No. 1 with his debut album, as well as the youngest male artist to top the chart with a debut. Christmas With Scotty McCreery, released in 2012, sold 416,000 copies, while his last studio album, 2013's See You Tonight, moved 279,000 units.
McCreery, who was named best new artist at the 2012 Academy of Country Music Awards, had been recording a new album for the past several months with producer Frank Rogers. First single "Southern Belle" peaked at No. 45 on the Country Airplay chart. It is unclear what will happen with the tracks he has already recorded. In September, he told Billboard of his work on the new album, "I definitely feel like I've grown and I definitely feel more confident. I've still got stuff to learn. I feel like the stuff we've written has really been a good example of what I'm doing, who I am, what I'm about, and I'm writing with Nashville's best. I'm lucky to be able to say that."
In May, Zondervan will release McCreery's autobiography, Go Big or Go Home. McCreery will also appear on the final season of American Idol.
