Amy Macdonald Holds On To Euro Chart No. 1
Billboard's new European Albums listing shows a third week at No. 1 for Amy Macdonald's "A Curious Thing" (Mercury/Universal), and there's a third consecutive, and fourth aggregate, week atop European Hot 100 Singles for Stromae's "Alors On Danse" (Mosaert/Vertigo).
Macdonald, whose European sales power base is in the GSA (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) territories, retains her lead in Germany and Austria, but falls 1-2 in Switzerland. Elsewhere, "Curious" slides 15-19 in her native United Kingdom. The lead track from it, "Don't Tell Me That It's Over," falls 26-39 on European Hot 100 Singles.
There's a new entry at No. 2 on European Albums for Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet Tour" (Warner Bros.), after the live set debuted at No. 1 in Portugal, No. 2 in Italy, No. 3 in Spain, No. 5 in Switzerland, No. 6 in France and a relatively modest No. 17 in the United Kingdom, on 12,000 sales.
Lady Gaga falls 2-3 overall with "The Fame" (Interscope/Universal), despite climbing 7-6 in Switzerland, 10-7 in Austria, 10-9 in Portugal and 20-10 in Spain. Justin Bieber's "My World" (Universal Island/Def Jam) climbs 5-4 on the composite chart, improving 3-2 in Austria and 7-6 in Ireland and adding a No. 2 debut in Portugal. It also holds at No. 3 in the United Kingdom and No. 7 in Germany.
Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies)" (Interscope/Universal) is down 3-5 Europe-wide, although it's back in the Danish top ten at No. 8, and edges 21-20 in the United Kingdom. Sade's former European Albums No. 1 "Soldier of Love" (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) holds steady on that chart at No. 6, now standing at No. 9 in both Sweden and Switzerland.
The Gorillaz album "Plastic Beach" (Parlophone/EMI) falls 4-7 on the pan-European survey, with Boyzone's "Brother" (Polydor/Universal) holding at No. 8 and Scorpions' "Sting In The Tail" (Sony Music Entertainment) down 7-9. The Boyzone album is No. 1 again in the United Kingdom, with 45,000 new sales, and the Scorpions set falls 2-3 in Germany and 6-10 in Switzerland. Closing out the European top ten, Unheilig's "Grosse Freiheit" (Universal) moves back 13-10, after improving 4-2 in Germany and 4-3 in Austria.
Stromae's singles supremacy is fuelled by another week at No. 1 again in France, Austria and Switzerland, and "Alors On Danse" also holds at No. 2 in Germany. Rihanna's "Rude Boy" (Def Jam/Universal) is closing in on the European singles crown, moving 3-2 in its tenth week as it holds at No. 3 in Ireland and No. 4 in Norway.
