Crossover country chanteuse Faith Hill took home three awards last night (Jan. 8) at the 28th annual American Music Awards. She picked up honors for pop/rock and country female artist, and the country album honor for "Breathe" (Warner Bros.). Her husband, fellow country artist Tim McGraw, shared some of the spotlight, taking home the award for country male artist. Toni Braxton and Creed each took home a pair of trophies during the ceremonies, which were hosted by teen sensation Britney Spears and rapper/actor L.L. Cool J. Similar to the People's Choice Awards, winners of the AMAs are determined by fans. One honor, the newly introduced Internet fans' artist of the year award, was not included on the ballot sent to 20,000 music buyers, from which the winners are chosen. 'N Sync picked up that award, voting through the show's Web site for which ended at 9:30 p.m. ET last night, an hour and-a-half into the show. As previously reported, Janet Jackson was honored with the special Award Of Merit, while rock mainstay Aerosmith was presented with the International Artist Award. In accepting her honor, Jackson promised to deliver a new album and tour later this year. In between award presentations, the celebrity-packed show at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles was filled with a wide range of performances. Female pop reigned supreme, represented by Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Pink, and Jessica Simpson. Country kid and country new artist award winner Billy Gilman, SHeDaisy, Ricky Martin, Aerosmith, and Marilyn Manson also performed. Another new category will be added to the line-up in 2002, AMA executive producer Dick Clark announced after the conclusion of the ceremony. Beginning in 2002, the Coca-Cola New Music Award will be presented to an unsigned artist or band who will perform during the show. The artist will be chosen by a panel of music industry executives from semi-finalists picked during a nationwide artist search in conjunction with the CMJ Network.
