Christopher Chambers, 30, was the seventh defense witness and the third to say he saw Combs dancing with then/girlfriend Jennifer Lopez -- but not firing shots-- in Club New York on Dec. 27, 1999.
Chambers, who said he never saw Combs with a gun, added he knew of the rapper because of his celebrity but did not know him or any of his associates personally. Later, under cross-examination by a prosecutor, Chambers testified that he remembered little more than a crouching, empty-handed Combs.
Combs, 31, bodyguard Anthony ''Wolf'' Jones, 34, and rapper Jamal ''Shyne'' Barrow, 21, are on trial in connection with the shooting. Combs and his bodyguard are charged with two counts of gun possession. Barrow is charged with attempted murder. Combs also is charged with bribery for allegedly offering his driver $50,000 to take the gun rap for him.
Chambers, a Long Island mechanic, said he was behind Combs and his entourage moments before the shooting occurred. About 20 seconds after the shots rang out, Combs "raised up and headed for the exit. Everybody was running," Chambers testified. He said that was the last time he saw Combs.
Under cross-examination, Chambers did not recall many details of the evening, including whether he or his brother had driven to the nightclub.
Also on Friday, club security worker Trenton Stewart testified that the gunshots fired in the club came from his left. He said Combs was standing directly behind him when the shooting started.
