Rapper DMX (real name: Earl Simmons) has begun serving a 15-day jail sentence for driving without a license. The rapper landed at New York's Buffalo Niagara International Airport yesterday (Feb. 26) and went straight to the Erie County Correctional Facility in nearby Alden, where he surrendered, according to his attorney, Mark Mahoney. With an automatic reduction of the sentence by one-third, and credit for the day of his arrest, Mahoney said Simmons likely would be released in about a week.

Simmons, who was nominated for two Grammy awards this year, was pulled over on Route 33 in the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga last March, three hours after a performing a concert in Buffalo. He later pleaded guilty to driving without a license, marijuana possession, and two parking tickets. It was his fifth arrest for driving without a license since September 1998.

Cheektowaga Town Justice Ronald Kmiotek on Feb. 9 signed a warrant for Simmons' arrest after the rapper missed a court-ordered deadline to begin serving the sentence. Simmons' publicist said he was in California promoting a soon-to-be-released movie at the time.
