Van Stephenson, a former member of the country group BlackHawk, died Sunday at his Nashville-area home after a long struggle with melanoma. He was 45.

Stephenson wrote Crystal Gayle's 1979 hit "Your Kisses Will" and co-wrote several hits for Restless Heart. In 1984, he had a pop hit of his own, "Modern Day Delilah" on MCA, before hooking up with Henry Paul and Dave Robbins to form BlackHawk. The group recorded for Arista Nashville from 1993 until last year and scored seven top-10 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.

At deadline, memorial arrangements were still being made. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Stephenson is survived by three children..r
