Pop superstar Michael Jackson is shopping his MJJ Records label, a joint deal with Sony Music, to other label groups, sources tell the Hollywood Reporter. MJJ Records, which Jackson launched in 1993 as part of a multimedia deal, is still under contract with Sony.
As Jackson, who is signed to Sony's Epic Records Group, continues to be a top-selling act internationally and given that MJJ has not produced any megaselling acts, it is not likely that Sony will prevent the pop star from making changes at MJJ, sources said.
MJJ Records president and CEO Jerry Greenberg, who helped form the label, exited his post in February to relaunch Mirage Records. A successor to the role has yet to be named. The label's roster includes 3T, Tatyana Ali, and No Authority, none of whom have yet dented the top half of The Billboard 200.
Jackson recently completed a new studio album that is slated for release this year on Epic, but no official date has been announced. He is expected to preview new songs during a star-studded performance at New York's Madison Square Garden on Sept. 7, which will mark his first North American concert in 11 years and his first onstage appearance with his brothers since the Jacksons' mid-1980s "Victory" tour.
Representatives from Sony Music and MJJ declined comment. Representatives for Jackson could not be reached for comment at deadline.
