Algerian vocalist Cheb Mami will kick off a rare, and brief, U.S. tour July 11 in Washington, D.C. The Rai artist, who gained substantial international recognition for his hit duet with Sting, "Desert Rose," will visit seven cities before wrapping up the trek July 20 in Los Angeles. The tour will follow the July 3 U.S. release of Mami's fifth album, "Dellali" (Mondo Melodia/Ark 21).
Among the tour's stops will be a July 13 double-bill with Transglobal Underground in Brooklyn, N.Y., as part of the Celebrate Brooklyn concert series. The following day, Mami will perform during Detroit's Concert of Colors, which will boast appearances by Femi Kuti, Transglobal Underground, George Benson, Walela, Neville Staple of the Specials, and the Son Seals Blues Band, among others, across its two days.
"Desert Rose" peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart and at No. 17 on The Billboard Hot 100. Mami joined Sting last September for a performance of the song on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman," and the following night at Sting's free show in New York's Central Park. Mami and his 10-piece band also opened the show.
