Ray Charles made a $1 million donation to Albany State University, and the legendary R&B singer has promised more help for the southwest Georgia school. The $1 million check from the Ray Charles Foundation is the first installment of a $2 million pledge made by the Albany native, said college president Portia H. Shields.

The check, donated in honor of Aretha Robinson, Charles' mother, was presented to the university during a visit by Joe Adams, Charles' manager.

Adams praised the campus and said Albany had changed a great deal from Charles' childhood recollection. "Ray remembers Albany as a place with a general store where you had to go to make a telephone call," Adams said.

Shields said the rest of the $2 million pledge is expected by the end of the year.
