Outkast was a double winner at the first BET Awards, presented last night (June 19) at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. The hip-hop duo won for best male group and video of the year for "Ms. Jackson," from the critically acclaimed La Face/Arista set "Stankonia." The album has sold more than 3 million copies in the U.S., according to SoundScan.

Destiny's Child, the top contender with three nominations, took home only the award for best female group. Additional winners were Musiq Soulchild (best male, R&B), Jay-Z (best male, hip-hop), Nelly (best new artist), Mary J. Blige (best female, R&B), Eve (best female, hip-hop), and Donnie McClurkin (best gospel artist).

Whitney Houston was honored with a musical tribute by Christina Aguilera and Luther Vandross, an enthusiastic standing ovation from the audience, and a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, and her mother, gospel artist Cissy Houston. "I'm every woman! I'm a survivor," said Houston, who has six Grammy awards and several films to her credit. "The best is yet to come."

Lil Bow Wow won the viewers' choice award for "What's My Name." The young rapper was joined on-stage by an unbilled Shaquille O'Neal. Other performers included Outkast, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Sisqo, Jay-Z, Patti LaBelle with McClurkin, and Eve with No Doubt's Gwen Stefani.
