Movie songs continue to hold sway on the new U.K. singles chart, as the multi-artist remake of LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" (Interscope/Polydor) from "Moulin Rouge" goes straight to No. 1, while Faith Hill's "There You'll Be" (Warner Bros.) from "Pearl Harbor" debuts at No. 3. Of the current crop, only Christina Aguilera, who is joined on "Lady Marmalade" by Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink, had ever topped the U.K. charts before, with "Genie in a Bottle" in 1999.
It's the second time "Lady Marmalade" has reached the top of the U.K. chart in just over three years. U.K. female pop act All Saints also reached the peak with the song as part of a double-sided hit with a cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge" in May 1998.
Interscope/Polydor boasts two other singles in the U.K. top-10 (2Pac's "Until the End of Time" at No. 7 and Limp Bizkit's "My Way" at No. 10) this week, as well the highest new entry on the album chart, from rap act D12's "Devil's Night." The set, which prominently features Eminem, landed at No. 2.
A strong week for album debuts also includes "Origin of Symmetry" (Mushroom), the sophomore release by U.K. modern rockers Muse, at No. 3, and "Outrospective" by dance experimentalists Faithless (Cheeky/Arista) at No. 4. Travis' "The Invisible Band" holds off the competition for a second week at No. 1.
Across Europe, Manu Chao becomes the first French artist ever to top Music & Media's European Top 100 Albums chart, as "Proxima Estacion: Esperanza" (Virgin) jumps 3-1. The album from the Latin-flavored pop-rock artist, who turned 40 last Thursday, debuts at No. 1 in Spain, holds at the top in France, Italy, and Switzerland, and resides in the top-10 in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Portugal, and Sweden.
"Angel" by Shaggy featuring Rayvon (MCA) is No. 1 for a third straight week on Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles survey, on which the 2Pac single rockets 43-10.
