Even though Atomic Kitten's "Eternal Flame" (Innocent/Virgin) started a second week at the top of the U.K. singles survey, Britain's big chart achiever of the week is David Gray. The singer/songwriter's "White Ladder" album (iht/East West) finally reached No. 1 in its 66th week on the chart, some two years and five months after its original release.
Meanwhile, Atomic Kitten has now spent more time at No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart than any other act this year, adding two weeks with its cover of the Bangles' "Eternal Flame" to the four the group spent at the top with "Whole Again" in February. Columbia's "Eternal Flame: The Best of the Bangles" benefited from the new attention to the song with a 17-15 climb on the U.K. album chart, where Warner Bros.' new "The Very Best of Prince" package debuted at No. 2.
But it was bad news for 'N Sync, whose Jive set "Celebrity" is flying out of North American stores, but plummets 12-26 in its second week of U.K. chart action.
The singles chart has an unusually quiet week, with tracks by Ian Van Dahl, Wyclef Jean, and OPM climbing back into the top-10 after dropping out last week. The highest new entry, Geri Halliwell's "Scream if You Wanna Go Faster," was nevertheless a disappointment for the Chrysalis artist, with the lowest debut of her solo career at No. 8. Train's "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)" (Columbia), which is No. 8 on The Billboard Hot 100, made its U.K. debut at No. 10.
Around Europe, the multi-artist Interscope/Polydor single "Lady Marmalade" dethroned Shaggy's "Angel" (MCA) at No. 1 on Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally. Atomic Kitten's "Eternal Flame" was the highest new entry on that chart at No. 6.
Shaggy's "Hotshot" holds its place at the top of the European Top 100 Albums chart, on which Denmark's classically-trained, dance-friendly Safri Duo climbed 16-10 climb with "Episode II."
