As tipped here last month, Virgin Records will release a Smashing Pumpkins best-of set in the fall. The "Greatest Hits" album will be available as a single disc, or as a double-disc package including a new B-sides compilation titled "Judas O Riley." A DVD including all of the Pumpkins' videos and a documentary will also be released as part of the "Greatest Hits" push.

"Judas" will serve as companion piece to 1994's "Pisces Iscariot," which collected B-sides and rarities from the group's first six years of existence. "Judas" completes the picture, compiling lesser-heard tracks from the sessions for the band's three final albums, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," "Adore," and "MACHINA/the Machines of God."

It is not known if any of the 25 previously unreleased tracks the Pumpkins disseminated for free online last fall will be included on the forthcoming releases. Those songs were reportedly submitted for release but rejected by Virgin; at the time, the band said it had "no plans for further release" of the material.

The defunct band's frontman Billy Corgan has been involved in a number of new projects, including an as-yet-unnamed band with whom he has spent time in the recording studio. He performed six dates as a guitarist with electronic pop veterans New Order, and played on "Turn My Way," a song from the act's seventh album, "Get Ready," due Aug. 27 internationally and Oct. 16 in North America from Qwest/Warner Bros. Corgan has also produced three tracks for vocalist Marianne Faithfull's forthcoming album.
