Gorillaz, the cartoon band fronted by Blur's Damon Albarn and featuring a host of guest stars, grabbed six nominations for the MTV Europe Music Awards, to be handed out Nov. 8 at the Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany. The act is up for best group, best new act, best dance act, best U.K. act, best Web site, and best song for the international hit single "Clint Eastwood."
Right behind are Craig David, U2, and Limp Bizkit with four nominations each. The latter two groups will battle it out in the same categories: best album, best Web site, best group, and best rock act. David's nominations include best R&B act, best new act, best U.K. act, and best male act.
Destiny's Child, Dido, and Eminem racked up three nominations apiece. In an unusual twist, Eminem will compete as a solo act against his own hip-hop collective, D12, for the best hip-hop act trophy. Outkast, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Daft Punk, Shaggy, and Crazy Town collected two nominations each.
Fans can vote for winners through the MTVEurope.com site. As previously reported, Jackson, Dido, and Destiny's Child will perform live at the awards ceremony, with additional acts to be announced in the near future.
Madonna and Eminem were the big winners at last year's event, held in Stockholm and hosted by Wyclef Jean. Madonna's Maverick album "Music" helped her pick up prizes for best dance artist and best female artist, while Eminem won for best hip-hop artist, and saw his "The Marshall Mathers LP" (Web/Aftermath/Interscope) named best album.
