Rapper Erick Sermon was in critical but stable condition today (Sept. 28) after slamming his Mercedes-Benz into a cement divider on a highway. Sermon, 32, suffered broken bones and internal bleeding after the accident Tuesday in Patterson, N.J., according to a spokesperson at Sermon's record label, J Records.

Sermon was heading home to Long Island after finishing up a video shoot in upstate New York when the accident occurred on a rain-slicked roadway. "He apparently just fell asleep behind the wheel and he skidded and ran into a wall," the spokesperson said.

Sermon regained consciousness on Thursday but remained hospitalized at St. Joseph's in Patterson. He can't speak because his jaw has been wired shut. "He's going to make it, but it's going to be a long road to recovery," the spokesperson added.

Sermon, whose latest hit, "Music," features the late Marvin Gaye, is one of rap's original hitmakers. He got his start in the late '80s as part of the duo EPMD. His new album, "Music," is scheduled for an Oct. 23 release in North America.
