The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) have already changed the sound of urban music from behind the boards. Having crafted hits for everyone from N.O.R.E. to Britney, the Virginia-based duo, along with childhood buddy Shay, takes its sound to the next level with this album, recorded under the guise of N*E*R*D. A blend of hip-hop, soul, rock, and funk, the act's debut is both everything you would expect from the group and like nothing you've heard before. "Lapdance," the set's politically driven lead single, is as infectious as it is disturbing. Other standouts include "Provider," "Run to the Sun," and "Rock Star." Having scrapped the original record-ing for the current live instrument version, the long-delayed album was well worth the wait.—RH
