The trio of musical categories for the 28th annual People's Choice Awards are populated with a nearly equal mix of country and pop artists. Country artists dominate the male musical performer slate as Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, and George Strait will compete for the honor.

Faith Hill is the lone country nominee in the female musical performer category. She'll go head-to-head with pop icons Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears. In the musical group column, rival boy bands 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys will vie for the prize against country act the Dixie Chicks.

Nominees are in 18 categories covering film, television, and music, and the winners are determined by a nationwide poll conducted by the Gallup Organization. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington lead with nominations in the favorite film actor and favorite dramatic actor categories.

Actor/comedian Kevin James ("The King of Queens") will host the Jan. 13 ceremony, which will air live on CBS.
