The special, hosted by Carson Daly, will be produced at an undisclosed overseas U.S. military base and include concert performances, backstage footage, and stories spotlighting the stationed soldiers. It will air on the network at 2 p.m. ET on New Year's Day.
"At MTV, we've built our reputation on inventing new ways to deliver entertainment to our audience," network president said Van Toffler in a statement. "We're excited about working with the USO and Armed Forces Entertainment on this project to produce a show that will be unlike any holiday special."
The nonprofit, nongovernment-affiliated USO has been providing homegrown entertainment to U.S. military personnel overseas since its inception over 60 years ago. This special will mark the first time it has coordinated an event with the one of the MTV networks.
Last month, singers Jessica Simpson, Robert Goulet, and Rick Springfield, comedians Carrot Top and Rich Little, and magicians Siegfried & Roy were among the more than 40 acts that took part in "Las Vegas Salutes the Spirit of America," proceeds from which also went to USO.
