Animated U.K. hip-hop act Gorillaz snared a leading six nominations for the 2002 Brit Awards, announced tonight (Jan. 14) at Abbey Road Studios in London. The Parlophone/Virgin act was nominated for best British group, album ("Gorillaz"), newcomer, single and video ("Clint Eastwood"), and dance act. Dido, Robbie Williams, and Kylie Minogue earned four nods apiece, while the Strokes were the most-selected international act with three.

Also in the running for best British group ware Jamiroquai, Radiohead, Stereophonics and Travis. Gorillaz's rivals for British album are Craig David's "Born To Do It," Dido's "No Angel," Radiohead's "Kid A," and Travis' "The Invisible Band."

The race for best British male solo artist is between David, Williams, Aphex Twin, Elton John, and Ian Brown, while Dido, Geri Halliwell, PJ Harvey, Sade, and Sophie Ellis Bextor are up for best British female artist.

Among other international nominees, male solo artist nods went to Bob Dylan, Dr. Dre, Ryan Adams, Shaggy, and Wyclef Jean, while female solo were earned by Alicia Keys, Anastacia, Bjork, Kylie Minogue, and Nelly Furtado. Daft Punk, Destiny's Child, Limp Bizkit, R.E.M., and the Strokes are up for best international group.

Williams led last year's winners with three, including best British single and video for "Rock DJ." Despite a record six nominations, David walked away with no trophies.

This year's Brit Awards, to be held Feb. 20 at Earls Court and again sponsored by MasterCard, will be broadcast the following evening in the U.K. by ITV1.
