Veteran U.K. independent record label Rough Trade will on March 18 release a compilation celebrating electronic artists past and present, with the track list selected by staff members at the Rough Trade retail stores. The two-CD collection, "Electronic 01," will be released in the U.K. in conjunction with Mute, with whom Rough Trade teamed for last year's three-CD compilation "Rough Trade - 25 Years."

"Electronic 01" features 40 tracks from electronic music pioneers (Brian Eno, Can, Kraftwerk, John Cage), veteran artists (Human League, New Order, Throbbing Gristle), and current favorites (Aphex Twin, Matmos, Autechre, Oval, Stereolab). A series of special live dates in London during April and May are being planned to coincide with the release, but no acts have yet been confirmed. Similar shows were staged last year featuring Beth Orton, Tindersticks, and Mark Eitzel, among others.

Geoff Travis opened the first Rough Trade shop in Kensington, West London, in 1976. What followed was an expansion into a record label that soon became the last word in the indie scene, thanks to the success of bands such as the Smiths and Stiff Little Fingers. The label's current acts include the Strokes and former Mazzy Star vocalist Hope Sandoval.
