The beauty is in how well the pieces fit together, from the effortless way in which the band members lock in with one another to the pleasure of listening to the guitarist's jazz fusion lines snaking their way through this set of rock'n'roll-edged jazz tunes. Sure, it would be easy to say that Scofield is playing to the college kids, but truth is, there is as much jazz improvisation here as you are apt to find anywhere, and Scofield sure makes it sound like fun. It's early in the year, but the Scofield band has already set the bar quite high for jazz releases in 2002.—SG
