Pepsi plans to unveil a new 90-second commercial starring the teen pop star during the first quarter of the National Football League's annual championship contest. Last year, Spears performed during the halftime show with Aerosmith, 'N Sync, and Mary J. Blige.
Dubbed "Now and Then," the commercial is a look at more than five decades of Pepsi advertising, culminating with Spears' 2002 update of the "Joy of Pepsi" jingle. The spot will mark the cola company's 17th consecutive year of advertising during the Super Bowl broadcast, traditionally the most watched television event of the year. Super Bowl coverage begins at 6 p.m. ET on Fox in the U.S., with a full slate of pre-game festivities to be shown on the network throughout the afternoon.
Pepsi is also offering behind-the-scenes video of Spears and the cast of the commercial on the Web at pepsi.yahoo.com. The site also features a poll on the favorite generation of Pepsi's advertising; the winning era will be featured in a 30-second commercial shown during the second quarter of Sunday's game between the AFC champion New England Patriots and the NFC champion St. Louis Rams. Voting will be open through 11:59 p.m. PT on Friday.
