With five nominations, Toronto-based modern rock act Our Lady Peace leads the field of Juno Awards nominees. Hard rock act Nickelback and veteran singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen each tied with four nominations for the Junos, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards. As previously reported, the 2002 Juno Awards will take place April 14 at One Stadium in St. John's, Newfoundland, and will be hosted by the Barenaked Ladies.

The event, which will be broadcast live by CTV, will also boast newly confirmed performances by Alanis Morissette, Nelly Furtado, Diana Krall, Amanda Marshall, Nickelback, Sum 41, and the Barenaked ladies.

Our Lady Peace's "Spiritual Machines" (Columbia) and Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" (EMI) will go head-to-head for best album. The bands also meet in the best single ("Life" and "How You Remind Me," respectively) and best group categories. OLP is also nominated for best album design, and best video ("In Repair," directed by Oli Goldsmith), while Nickelback is also up for best rock album.

Cohen, meanwhile, is nominated in the best artist, best songwriter, best pop album ("Ten New Songs," Columbia), and best video ("In My Secret Life") categories. At 67, he will be up against younger artists Sarah Harmer, Ron Sexsmith, Rufus Wainwright, and Jann Arden in the best songwriter category.

Artists with three nominations are Sum 41, Krall, and Hawksley Workman. Those with dual nominations are La Bottine Souriante, Wave, Marshall, Furtado, Wainwright, Jellestone, Gabrielle Destroismaisons, and Sugar Jones, as well as James Ehnes, who will compete against himself in the best classical album category.

Producer/musician Daniel Lanois, who along with concert promoter Michael Cohl will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the Juno ceremonies, received a best producer nomination for U2's "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation."
