Musician/actor Little Steven Van Zandt will launch a weekly syndicated radio show with an April 7 gala taping in New York. "Hard Rock Cafe Presents Little Steven's Underground Garage" will showcase music by 1960s-era garage rock pioneers and the bands carrying on the tradition today. The two-hour show will bow in 20 broadcast markets on a combination of rock and talk stations, with most planning to air "Underground Garage" on Sunday nights (see affiliate list below for details).

"Garage rock is music for older people with young spirits and young people with old souls," Van Zandt said in a statement. "It's a certain sensibility that you have when you're 17 or when you're 67. It never goes away."

The debut show will be taped at the Hard Rock Cafe's New York location, which will be outfitted with a retro-60's motif, complete with mini-skirted go-go girls and a display of rock memorabilia from the era. Hard Rock outlets in participating cities will also host parties and promotions to launch the show, which is nationally sponsored in part by Pepsi-Cola North America and Unilever.

An accomplished guitarist with the E Street Band and as a solo artist, Van Zandt launched a garage rock concert series last July, which presents bands at such New York-area venues as the Village Underground and the Warsaw. Van Zandt hosts some of the events himself, while others have been directed by Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye and Fleshtones singer/keyboardist Peter Zaremba.

Van Zandt has also established his own garage band, the Lost Boyz, which is expected to release its debut album sometime this year. The group's song "Affection" appeared on "Peppers and Eggs" (Sony Music Soundtrax), last year's sophomore soundtrack to the HBO mob drama "The Sopranos." The fourth season of the show, on which Van Zandt portrays mobster Silvo Dante, will premiere in September.
