Producers extraordinaire the Neptunes step into the artists' spotlight with their debut set, In Search Of . . . Under the guise of N*E*R*D (No One Ever Really Dies), the Neptunes (Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo), along with childhood friend Shay, reference almost every musical genre on this self-produced disc, which features all live instrumentation. Lead single "Lap Dance" is driven by a thrashing electric guitar. Williams' familiar vocal, known to anyone who has listened to R&B radio in the past year, is the anchor to the otherwise chaotic track. Other highlights on the frantic set include "Run to the Sun" and "Truth or Dare," which features Kelis. Having worked with such artists as Jay-Z, 'N Sync, Mystikal, and Britney Spears, among others, the Neptunes prove with this disc that one should never underestimate the power of a N*E*R*D.—RH
