Former Ozzy Osbourne/Motley Crue drummer Randy Castillo died Tuesday at the age of 41. While his cause of death has yet to be disclosed, it's believed Castillo succumbed from complications relating to his battle with cancer.
News of his passing came in a post late Tuesday by Motley Crue founding bassist Nikki Sixx on the band's official Web site. "I'm sorry to inform you this way, but Randy Castillo passed away tonight," Sixx wrote. "He always had a smile and positive things to say about everything and everybody... He was a great drummer. He was a great, caring person and a very spiritual soul. We will miss him so much... and jam together again someday soon."
Castillo had reportedly suffered a ruptured duodenal stomach ulcer in 2000 and underwent emergency surgery. Two months afterward, while in recovery, he discovered a small lump on his jaw that he later learned was cancer. He sought treatment and early last year -- after extensive chemotherapy and radiation -- Castillo had revealed that he felt he had defeated cancer. A post to fans in April 2001 declared, "Won the battle against the big C!"
Castillo was originally known for his work behind the drum kit with Lita Ford on her 1984 set "Dancin' on the Edge," and with Osbourne on such albums as "No More Tears" and "No Rest for the Wicked." He joined Motley Crue in 1999 after Tommy Lee exited the group. Although he played drums on the band's 2000 Beyond album "New Tattoo," he was unable to tour because of his illness. Late last year, he announced he was still in good health and, with Motley on hiatus, was pursuing a new project with his one-time Ozzy bandmate Mike Inez (also of Alice In Chains).
The Albuquerque, N.M., native is survived by his mother and four sisters. Fans wishing to share stories about Castillo with his family, or contribute to his funeral expenses may correspond to P.O. Box 4434, Albuquerque, NM 87196.
