Vanguard Records is preparing the compilation "Songcatcher II: The Tradition That Inspired the Movie" for a May 7 North American release. The 17-track set of traditional folk ballads mined from the label's vaults follows last year's acclaimed collection, "Songcatcher: Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture."
The term "songcatcher" refers to "anybody who collects songs, whether a singer or an outsider." The tracks that make up the two Vanguard collections represent songs that survived through the tradition of passing them along from generation to generation, before the advent of recording technologies.
The new album features Dock Boggs' version of "Oh Death," a song featured on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack that won Ralph Stanley this year's best male country performance Grammy award. Also reminiscent of that set is Sarah Ogan Gunning's "Girl of Constant Sorrow," which she reworked from the traditional "(I Am a) Man of Constant Sorrow." That track won the best country collaboration with vocals Grammy for the Soggy Bottom Boys (Dan Tyminski, Harley Allen, and Pat Enright).
The set also boasts Mother Maybelle Carter's recording of "Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies" and Fiddlin' Arthur Smith's "Leather Britches," a song passed along by early English and Scottish immigrants and originally known as "Lord MacDonald's Reel." Also included are four tracks from Doc Watson: "Georgie," "Matty Grooves," "Pretty Saro," and "Winter's Night."
The release will also include liner notes by Sheila Kay Adams, a seventh generation traditional ballad singer, storyteller, and author who served as a voice coach for the "Songcatcher" film. Released in 1999, the movie starred Janet McTeer and Aidan Quinn, and won awards at the Sundance, Los Angeles, Deauville, and Director's View film festivals.
