David Bowie has selected a star-studded lineup for the U.K.'s Meltdown festival, including Coldplay, Gorillaz, Suede, Mercury Rev, Supergrass, Pete Yorn, and Badly Drawn Boy. The event, which runs June 12-30 at Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, will also feature a June 29 performance by Bowie, the Dandy Warhols, and BBC Radio 2 DJ Jonathan Ross.
Tickets are on sale now at the Festival Hall Box Office and are also being made available to members of Bowie's BowieNet fan organization. Seats can be purchased online beginning Thursday (April 25) from the Royal Festival Hall Web site.
Other Meltdown shows on tap include cult favorite singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston and the Legendary Stardust Cowboy; Bowie recasts the latter's "I Took a Trip (On a Space Shuttle)" as the uptempo dance track "I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spaceship" on his new ISO/Columbia album, "Heathen," due June 11.
On June 21, Gorillaz will team with former Specials vocalist Terry Hall for an event billed as "Gorillaz' Space Monkeyz Dub Session" and Asian Dub Foundation will perform a live score to the film "La Haine." Irish rock veterans the Waterboys will perform an acoustic set on June 16, while reactivated New York underground legends Television are scheduled to play on June 19-20.
In conjunction with the festival, Bowie has selected a handful of digital films for screening, including "24 Hour Party People," which chronicles the history of the U.K.'s Factory Records and the Manchester music scene of the past three decades. The animated Japanese film "Avalon" and the unconventional flicks "Timecode" and "Tape" will also be shown. A number of artists will have their multimedia works on display as part of the "Sound and Vision" segment of the event.
Following Meltdown, Bowie has a handful of European dates on tap, including two Scandinavian shows with support from the White Stripes. As previously reported, Bowie has also been tapped to join Moby on the Area: Two tour, due to hit North American venues in late summer.
