Critically acclaimed musical pastiche artist DJ Shadow has announced six U.S. headlining live dates to coincide with the June 4 release of his sophomore album, "The Private Press" (MCA). The dates -- which commence with June 3-4 shows in New York and also include gigs in Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, and San Francisco -- follow a run of European dates prior to his participation in this year's Smokin' Grooves tour.
According to DJ Shadow's official Web site, a Los Angeles date will also be confirmed soon. Shadow will perform on the first four dates of the Smokin' Grooves tour, comprising three shows in California and a July 22 gig in Denver.
"The Private Press" is the long-awaited follow-up to 1996's Mo' Wax set "Entroducing," which has sold 228,000 units in the U.S. to date, according to SoundScan. The 1998 singles collection "Preemptive Strike" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and has sold 147,000 copies to date.
The new set extends Shadow's mastery of atmosphere on such tracks as "Fixed Income" and "Giving Up the Ghost," blending highly percussive, jungle-leaning rhythms with dark, sample-driven soundscapes. The early techno homage "You Can't Go Home Again" features a sample from the South American-derived "El Condor Pasa," popularized by Simon and Garfunkel on their 1970 Columbia album "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
