The first single from David Bowie's forthcoming ISO/Columbia album, "Heathen," will appear in a number of U.K. and European formats augmented with a number of rarities. Album extract "Slow Burn" will be the A-side single when it is released throughout Europe on July 1 as a promotional CD sampler, a promotional 7" vinyl single, two European CDs, two U.K. CDs, and a U.K. DVD, according to the singer's official Web site.

Although no plans for a stateside single release have been revealed, Bowie collectors are sure to seek out "Heathen" out-takes "When the Boys Come Marching Home" and "Wood Jackson," plus "Shadow Man," "Baby Loves That Way," and "You've Got a Habit," songs culled from his unreleased "Toy" album which will be spread across the various "Slow Burn" singles.

According to noted Bowie fan site Teenage Wildlife, the "Toy" recordings were planned for release in March or April 2001 and consist mostly of re-worked, lesser-known songs from the singer's 1960s era. Recording in New York with his touring band and longtime collaborator Tony Visconti, Bowie reportedly completed 13 tracks for the aborted disc. Alongside 10 well-aged Bowie compositions, the sessions yielded three new songs: "Uncle Floyd," "Afraid," and an untitled instrumental. Whether the remnants of the project will see release via future singles is not yet known.

"Heathen" is due June 11 and features nine new Bowie originals alongside covers of the Pixies' "Cactus," Neil Young's "I've Been Waiting for You," and a new interpretation of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy's "I Took a Trip (On a Space Shuttle)," which is recast as the uptempo dance track "I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spaceship." The artist will tour as part of Moby's Area2 festival this summer and is also curating the U.K.'s Meltdown festival next month.
