A Latin music series, a string of dance performances, and film screenings with bands opening or providing scores are a few of the mini-series that make up the Celebrate Brooklyn! season. Kicking off with a performance by New Orleans blues-soul-funkster Dr. John on June 20, the series will continue through the previously reported Unlimited Sunshine tour stop Aug. 23-24, featuring Cake, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, De La Soul, and Kinky.
The performances will all take place in the Prospect Park Bandshell, located at the park 9th St. entrance, which offers seating and lawn accommodations for up to 7,000 people. With the exceptions of the Unlimited Sunshine shows and an Aug. 17 benefit concert featuring reggae artist Capleton, admission to all shows in the series is free, though concertgoers are urged to make a $3 donation.
The Budweiser Latin Music Series encompasses four nights of shows, kicking off June 22 with performances by Luis Vargas, Coco Merenson, and Joseito Mateo. It will also present an Aug. 3 show with Kevin Ceballo, Manny Oquendo, and Willie Villegas, and Aug. 9-10 performances by Ely Guerra, Si*Se, Jumbo, and the Machito Orchestra featuring Chocolate and Nelson Gonzalez.
Other season highlights include the Haitian Kreyol Festival on June 30, the African Festival on July 12, an Aug. 18 performance by Saw Doctors and newcomer Gavin DeGraw, and a July 20 appearance by Nashville-based country-soul combo Lambchop.
