Songs recorded by Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue led the field with three honors at the 47th Ivor Novello Awards, Britain's premier songwriting honors, in a ceremony yesterday (May 23) at Le Meridien Grosvenor House on London's Park Lane. The Ivors, awarded only to British songwriting teams, were inaugurated 47 years ago as a response to the domination of American pop music in the United Kingdom.

Minogue's chart-topping "Can't Get You Out of My Head" earned her songwriting team of Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis honors in the dance, most performed, and international hit single categories. Veteran Irish rock outfit U2's "Walk On" won the best song musically and lyrically category, while best contemporary song went to "Shining Light," written by Tim Wheeler and performed by Ash.

John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams picked up the best original film score award for "Shrek," while homegrown popsters Hear Say saw songwriters Peter Kirtley, Tim Hawes, and Alison Clarkson pick up a gong for their best-selling U.K. single "Pure and Simple." Clarkson is better known as sultry rapper Betty Boo, who had U.K. hits with "Where Are You Baby" and "Doin' the Do" in the early 1990s.

A number of special awards were given out, including one to Sting for international achievement. "It's great to receive a songwriting award in front of other songwriters," said Sting as he picked up the prize. "You know how difficult it is to write a great song -- I've been trying for years," he quipped.

Other special awards were given to Kate Bush for outstanding contribution to British music and Dido as songwriter of the year. The special international award went to ABBA songwriters and performers Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.
