Esteemed pop producer and artist Nick Lowe -- whose 11th album, "The Convincer" (Yep Roc), was released Sept. 11, 2001 -- has finally booked a North American tour to support the album, after initial efforts to do so were thwarted by the terrorist attacks of that day. Lowe will embark on a solo acoustic trek July 12 at Santa Barbara, Calif.'s Lobero Theatre, and will wind through North America until an Aug. 9 date at the Edmonton Folk Festival.
"The Convincer" follows in the darker tradition of Lowe's previous couple albums on the Upstart label, "The Impossible Bird" (1994) and "Dig My Mood" (1998), in contrast with the more boisterously witty pop writing associated with his '70s and '80s work.
"I've been looking for a long time for a way to record myself and for a style that would suit the fact that I'm getting older," Lowe told Billboard last fall. "I had a brief career as a pop star in the late '70s and thoroughly enjoyed it, but as you know, most people have only a little time at that, and then it's over. Unless you're Cher or Elton John or someone like that, you either become a terrible parody of yourself and try and carry on doing the music you were doing as a kid, or you find some other way."
