Former Verve bassist Simon Jones and guitarist Simon Tong have resurfaced in the band the Shining, which will release its Epic debut, "True Skies," this fall in North America. The Shining will play its first North American live shows July 8 in New York and July 11 in Los Angeles. The band's lineup is rounded out by vocalist Duncan Baxter, guitarist Dan MacBean, and drummer Mark Heaney.
The Shining grew out of Tong, Baxter, and Heaney's erstwhile attempts to form a band with former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire, who had stopped working with his post-Roses project the Seahorses. Ultimately, no material was ever released, and Tong, Baxter, and Heaney regrouped with Jones and MacBean for the bulk of 2000 to write the songs found on "True Skies."
The band's dramatic rock sound certainly has elements in common with the Verve, which disbanded in 1999 after achieving international stardom with its final Virgin album, "Urban Hymns." Listeners will easily be able to identify Jones' signature bass work, while Baxter emotes in a style with equal rooting in Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and the Stone Roses' Ian Brown. "True Skies" was produced by longtime Verve collaborator Youth and mixed by Tom Rothrock (Elliott Smith, Beck).
Fans can view video footage and sample a number of tracks on the Shining's official Web site. Aside from the two U.S. shows, the group has a handful of dates lined up through mid-August; the itinerary is below:
