During downtime between Slipknot tours and albums, vocalist Corey Taylor, guitarist Jim Root, and drummer Joey Jordison have returned to a pair of long-festering side projects. Taylor and Root are working with their pre-Slipknot act Stone Sour, while Jordison has dropped the drums to play guitar in Murderdolls. Both will release debut albums this summer via Slipknot's label, Roadrunner.
Stone Sour will find Taylor and Root eschewing their masks to rejoin band founders Josh Rand (guitar) and Sean Economaki (bass). The group is completed by drummer Joel Ekman, while Slipknot DJ Sid Wilson will guest on a trio of tracks on the group's self-titled debut, due Sept. 17. Fans can expect the band's sound to back away from Slipknot's anonymous grindcore, as Taylor describes Stone Sour as "more like Metallica meets Alice in Chains."
Tomorrow (June 26), the group is planning to shoot a video for the track "Get Inside" at notorious Los Angeles rock club the Whisky. A video for the album track "Bother," featured on the "Spider-Man" soundtrack (where it is credited to Taylor), is also being developed.
Meanwhile, Jordison and Static X guitarist Tripp Eisen have created the "sadistically comical" punk act Murderdolls. The pair first met while their bands were out on the 1999 version of the Ozzfest tour. After deciding to do something together, and realizing he'd hit "a wall of adversity" with the rest of the lineup of his long-running side band the Rejects, Jordison opted to recruit new members to form the Murderdolls.
As Jordison has picked up the guitar for this project, Ben Graves will handle drum chores. Along with Eisen on guitar, vocalist Wednesday 13 and bassist Eric Griffin round out the band. Drawing lyrical inspiration from horror movies in the ilk of "Friday the 13th," the group will release its debut album, "Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls," on Aug. 20.
Last September, Slipknot's latest Roadrunner set, "Iowa," debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and No. 6 on Billboard's Top Internet Albums chart. Just a month after its release the set was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for U.S. shipments of 1 million copies.
