Idiosyncratic Welsh popsters Super Furry Animals are taking a break from the writing and recording of their sixth album for a fall North American tour, kicking off Sept. 18 and Detroit and wrapping Oct. 11 in Portland, Ore. The quintet's tour follows a similar spring jaunt that accompanied the North American release of "Rings Around the World" (XL/Beggars Group).
"Rings," which was released a year ago in the U.K., hit North American stores March 19 accompanied by a bonus disc featuring seven non-album b-sides. As previously reported, the album was simultaneously released with a DVD featuring specially commissioned films for each of the album's songs, bonus short films and songs, and remixes. It debuted at No. 32 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums tally.
All shows will be performed in surround sound, according to the group's official Web site. SFA has for the most part eschewed the European festival circuit this summer in favor of working on new material for the follow-up to "Rings," but it will play Spain's Benicassim festival Saturday (Aug. 3).
